The natural resources of New Bedford are rich, robust and are intended to be accessible for all citizens of New Bedford. The natural resources area of work focuses on four different categories. These categories include:

NB Resilient

1) reduce air, water, soil, noise, and light pollution

  • Blue Lane Project
    • Decrease vehicle traffic, thus preventing further air pollution
    • improving & implementing bike lanes

2) take an integrated water resource management approach that considers theĀ needs of the natural water ecosystem, human water use, and potential drought and flooding

  • Watershed Protection Plan: ensures future protection of the water resources and biological communities in New Bedford

3) add more tree canopy coverage equitably across the city

  • Urban Tree Canopy Project

4) protect wildlife and their habitat by using native or sustainable species in landscaping throughout the city.

  • Focus only on planting native plants & establishing pollinator gardens

Within the NB Resilient Plan, Sustainable land management practices have be implemented in order to improve soil health, water retention, and biodiversity, making ecosystems more resilient to climate-related stresses such as droughts and floods. Overall, resilience is crucial in preserving the well-being of the citizens of New Bedford and ensuring a climate-resilient future for both present and future generations.
